Frequently Asked Questions
How does ArtistScope DRM accessibility compare with similar products?

There are many applications offering protection from screen capture that are affective but only when known screen capture softwares are used. They are NOT protected from ALL screen capture as they rely on being able to detect the application by name, which means that should anyone use an application not on their list or simply rename the application then the protection is foiled. In contrast the CopySafe runtime provides total control over the resources used by ALL screen capture and video capture.

Adobe's Acrobat  Reader uses low-strength encryption to protect password and expiration settings but there is free software that removes their security, thus enabling copying and conversion to original various file formats. Other providers use wrappers but still rely on either the Adobe Reader engine or Ghost Script which is free to the public as source code under GPL. Subsequently these solutions cannot be considered to be secure for when it counts.

CopySafe PDF documents are encrypted using full strength encryption (128 bit MD5 & RC4 algorithms) which can only be opened using the unique CopySafe PDF engine.

How does ArtistScope DRM enforce expiration when the others can't?

The most difficult option to enforce is that of expiration dates. With the expiry date embedded in the PDF anyone can set their computer clock back and then open an expired document. While other providers try to enforce the expiration at the client end, when tagged for DRM CopySafe PDF will check an online time server before opening the document.

How does ArtistScope DRM prevent redistribution of passwords?

Usually passwords are embedded in the documents, but if a password gets redistributed by unscrupulous persons, nothing can be done, game over. However if Copysafe PDF is tagged for DRM then a second password can come into play which can be changed by the document’s author at any time.

Does ArtistScope DRM provide watermarking?

Watermarking is not necessary with CopySafe PDF documents because they cannot be copied in any way. However if watermarking is to be used for page decoration, any watermarks included in PDF prior to conversion will be maintained in the protected document.

How does ArtistScope DRM provide more control than other solutions?

Usually the rights of an individual to access a document are enforced by client side functions that read a registry key or certificate. Registry keys can easily be modified and unless the certificate used for validation can be verified by a third party, it also can easily be faked.  With ArtistScope DRM you have options that are much more secure:

• Restrict viewing to selected computers by unique machine ID.
• Restrict viewing by certificate that can be modified at the author’s end at any time.

ArtistScope DRM provides “total control” over documents even if they were downloaded months ago. Authors can change document security settings from a web page logged in from anywhere in the world that are immediately effective.

How is ArtistScope DRM more versatile for accessibility and ease of use?

Authors can upload documents from anywhere including internet cafes using any file format at their disposal:

• PDFs created by Adobe Acrobat and others
• Microsoft Word documents
• PowerPoint presentations
• Excel spreadsheets
• Html web pages
• All types of images

ArtistScope DRM can convert almost any type of file to a CopySafe PDF document.
